About This Race
The Old Dominion 100 stands as one of ultrarunning's most enduring challenges, having tested runners since 1979 across Virginia's demanding Massanutten Mountains. This legendary event maintains the grassroots spirit of early ultrarunning—entirely volunteer-run with no sponsors, staying true to its original character while attracting runners seeking an authentic test of endurance. The course demands versatility, traversing pavement, gravel roads, single track trails, ATV paths, logging roads, rocks, streams, and mud across 14 significant climbs totaling 14,000 feet of elevation gain. This is neither purely a trail race nor a road race, but a comprehensive challenge that tests a runner's ability to adapt across varied terrain in a single day. As part of the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning series, the Old Dominion draws serious ultrarunners aiming for the coveted silver buckle awarded to sub-24-hour finishers. With its early June timing, limited field of 105 runners, and qualification requirements, the race maintains an intimate, competitive atmosphere that honors ultrarunning's foundational values while providing a world-class challenge.
The Old Dominion course is a measured loop through the Massanutten Mountains, Shenandoah River Valley, and Fort Valley Virginia, featuring 14 significant climbs and 14,000 feet of elevation gain. Runners encounter an exceptional variety of terrain including pavement, gravel roads, single track trails, ATV trails, logging roads, rocky sections, stream crossings, and muddy conditions.
The course is designed as a comprehensive test of endurance and adaptability, challenging runners to maintain pace and efficiency across constantly changing surfaces. Twenty-three aid stations provide support throughout the loop, with crew access at designated points. The most challenging section occurs between miles 75-86, where safety runners are permitted due to the technical terrain typically traversed in darkness.
