About This Race
The Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko 102K sits in the middle of the UTMB series lineup, offering experienced ultra runners a substantial challenge through Australia's highest alpine country. The course traverses the Snowy Mountains backcountry around Thredbo, taking runners through subalpine woodlands, open high plains, and technical ridge sections that demand both physical endurance and tactical energy management. This distance attracts runners who've progressed beyond 50K events but aren't yet ready for the full 161K commitment. The route requires confidence on technical terrain and the ability to manage nutrition and pacing through extended periods between aid stations, characteristics that define serious mountain ultra running in the Southern Hemisphere's only true alpine environment.
Starting from Thredbo Village at 1,370 meters elevation, the course moves through varied mountain ecosystems that shift from dense eucalypt forest to windswept alpine herb fields. Technical singletrack sections alternate with more runnable fire road stretches, though the precise route configuration varies by year. Runners navigate rocky trail surfaces, root systems in lower elevations, and exposed ridgeline sections where weather conditions can change rapidly regardless of season.
