About This Race
Run with the Goats presents one of trail running's most unconventional challenges: a 31-mile adventure that requires runners to consume a beverage before each of seven 4.5-mile laps through Reata Canyon's singletrack trails. Now in its eighth year, this South Lake Tahoe event offers three distinct categories. The "Beers" division requires a 16-ounce beer before each lap, while "Lights" runners consume 12-ounce beers, and "Sobers" drink fizzy non-alcoholic beverages of their choice. What sets this race apart is its embrace of the DNF culture. Runners are actively encouraged to drop out when they've had enough, with organizers providing a welcoming potluck atmosphere for those who choose to stop and cheer on the continuing competitors. The format creates a unique community experience where the post-race gathering becomes as important as the running itself. The race takes place entirely on private property via trail easement in Reata Canyon, demanding respectful behavior from all participants. Runners must arrange transportation home if participating in the beer categories, and the event maintains a grassroots feel with its Facebook-based organization and potluck tradition. This is trail running with a decidedly social twist, where finishing is optional but camaraderie is guaranteed.
The entire course runs on singletrack trails within Reata Canyon, accessed through a trail easement over private property. Runners complete seven laps of 4.5 miles each, with the aid station and beverage requirement positioned at the start/finish area between each loop. The trails may be shared with other hikers and equestrians during the event, requiring runners to remain courteous and alert throughout their laps.
