About This Race

The Run for Kids Challenge combines trail running with meaningful charity work, supporting Smile-A-Mile, an Alabama nonprofit dedicated to families navigating childhood cancer. Since its inception, this event has raised over $100,000 while offering runners two distinct challenges around Oak Mountain State Park's scenic Double Oak Lake. The race features a unique dual format: a 10K that takes runners on two scenic loops around the lake, and a 12-hour endurance challenge that tests mental fortitude as much as physical fitness. The course weaves together paved roads, wooden boardwalks, lakeside trails, and wooded paths, creating a varied running experience that showcases Alabama's natural beauty. What sets this race apart is its community focus and charitable mission. The event includes a free half-mile kids run, making it a true family affair where running serves a greater purpose. With 100% of proceeds beyond basic expenses going directly to charity, runners know their registration fee makes a real difference in the lives of children and families facing cancer.

The course begins at Cedar Pavilion and follows a 3.26-mile loop around Double Oak Lake. Runners start on paved roads before transitioning to walking paths and sidewalks, then cross a beach area to reach boardwalks extending over the lake. The route continues on paved road before cutting toward the water, crossing grassy areas near the marina to reach Terrace Drive. From there, runners follow the Lake Trail around the lake, cross the dam, and complete the loop via a brief section of horse trail before returning to the pavilion.

For the 12-hour challenge, the format changes as time progresses: runners complete the full 3.26-mile loop for the first 10 hours and 45 minutes, then switch to a shorter 0.84-mile loop, and finally run a 582-foot loop for the final 15 minutes. This progressive shortening creates strategic opportunities and keeps the finish exciting as runners maximize their distance in the closing minutes.
