About This Event
The Ring of Fire returns to the alpine landscape of Tongariro National Park, offering runners a complete circumnavigation of Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand's highest volcano. Known as one of the most demanding events on the Aotearoa trail running calendar, this ultramarathon takes participants through rugged volcanic terrain, desert plateaus, scoria and lava fields, native bush, and tussock-covered ridgelines. Hosted by the Ohakune Events Charitable Trust, the event celebrates the connection between runners and this ancient volcanic landscape. The courses traverse remote alpine terrain with high altitude challenges and rapidly changing weather conditions, requiring both physical endurance and mental fortitude. Starting from Ohakune, runners travel anti-clockwise around the maunga through some of New Zealand's most treasured and challenging mountain terrain.
