About This Race
Despite its name, the Mountain Goat Trail Race is a road running event held entirely on paved surfaces along the former Mountain Goat Railroad corridor. This family-friendly race follows the historic rail-trail through the scenic Cumberland Plateau region of Tennessee, connecting the communities of Sewanee and Monteagle. The race offers three distance options to accommodate runners and walkers of varying abilities, from a casual 2-mile walk to a challenging half marathon. The event celebrates the transformation of the historic Mountain Goat Railroad, which operated from 1856 to 1985 and earned its name for tackling one of the steepest railroad ascents in the world.
All distances run on the paved Mountain Goat Trail, a converted rail-trail project built on the historic railroad bed. The half marathon begins at Mountain Outfitters in Monteagle and follows the trail to Sewanee before returning to the finish. The 5-mile run starts in downtown Sewanee, while the 2-mile walk begins at Bella Pearl's Restaurant in Sewanee, both finishing at Mountain Outfitters in Monteagle. The trail offers gentle grades befitting its railroad heritage, making it accessible for runners of all abilities.
