About This Event
The Leiden Marathon brings together runners and walkers across multiple distances through the historic university city of Leiden and surrounding Dutch countryside. Now in its 35th edition, this May event combines competitive racing with the warm atmosphere that characterizes Dutch running culture, featuring live music and enthusiastic crowd support throughout the course. The event spans two days, with walking events on Saturday and running distances on Sunday. All running routes start at Koninginnelaan and finish at the atmospheric Vismarkt in Leiden's city center. The race celebrates local heritage, with the 2026 medal honoring the historic Blue Tram that once connected Leiden to The Hague and coastal towns between 1924 and 1961. Participant feedback consistently highlights the excellent organization, friendly volunteers, and family-friendly atmosphere. With distances ranging from a free children's run to the full marathon, the event welcomes runners of all abilities while maintaining the cozy, community-focused spirit that makes Dutch races distinctive.
