About This Event
Established in 1952 and evolved from a race organized by the Youth Hostels Association, the Lake District Mountain Trial stands as the longest-running event of its kind in Great Britain. This annual September tradition tests runners' mountaineering ability and stamina across challenging Lake District terrain, combining fell running with orienteering principles. The event requires competitors to traverse difficult and often dangerous mountain terrain while making critical route choices and navigation decisions that directly impact both performance and safety. Each course demands not only physical endurance but also advanced navigational skills, as runners must plot their own routes between checkpoints using provided waterproof maps. With its rigorous vetting process for fell-running experience and comprehensive safety requirements, the Mountain Trial attracts serious mountain runners seeking one of the most demanding tests in the fell running calendar. The event includes electronic timing, post-race food, and an informal gathering to discuss the day's challenges.
