About This Race
The Hamster Endurance Runs offers a unique approach to timed ultrarunning on the shores of Lake Padden in Bellingham, Washington. Created in 2013 by Kelly Krieger as both a running challenge and fundraiser, this event has grown into a beloved fixture of the Pacific Northwest trail running calendar. Runners choose from 6, 12, 24, or 32-hour distances on a well-maintained 2.6-mile loop trail that circumnavigates the lake. The course provides an ideal testing ground for runners looking to explore their limits without the intimidation factor of highly technical terrain. The non-technical gravel path with only 150 feet of elevation gain per loop allows runners to focus on pacing, nutrition, and mental strategy rather than navigation or technical footwork. The event maintains an intimate, community-focused atmosphere with experienced volunteers and creative aid station offerings that have become part of the race's charm, including the famously adventurous peanut butter and pickle wraps.
The course follows a 2.6-mile loop trail around Lake Padden, featuring compact dirt and crushed gravel surfaces through wooded Pacific Northwest terrain. Each loop gains approximately 150 feet of elevation, making it accessible to runners of varying technical abilities while still providing enough variety to remain interesting over many hours. The trail is well-marked with additional lighting for nighttime hours, and runners must come prepared with headlamps for the extended distances that continue after dark.
