About This Event
Hidden away just behind Tokoroa township in New Zealand's South Waikato District, Cougar Mountain Bike Park has quietly become one of the region's best-kept secrets for trail runners. Built primarily for mountain biking, the park's 30+ kilometers of purpose-built trails feature bermed corners and flowing sections that translate beautifully to trail running, creating a unique experience through juvenile pine forest, mature pine forest, and native bush. The race takes place on carefully selected trails that balance technical challenge with pure running enjoyment. The terrain mix includes predominantly single track through varied forest environments, with sections of harvested forest areas and connecting gravel roads. Located just 50 minutes from Taupo, the venue offers runners access to specially themed trail sections, including the notable Flintstone-themed trails that showcase the park's playful character. As part of the four-event Roam Free Trail Series, this race emphasizes environmental responsibility by eliminating disposable cups at aid stations, requiring runners to bring their own hydration systems. All finishers receive a distinctive 3D blackberry flower medal, celebrating the local flora while marking completion of this distinctive trail running experience.
