About This Race
The Big Night Out Winchester transforms the ancient travellers' ways around Hampshire's historic city into an unforgettable nocturnal adventure. Running by headtorch light, participants navigate fully marked trails using bespoke fluorescent directional markers that guide them through centuries-old pathways including sections of the South Downs Way and Pilgrims Trail. This night trail event offers two distance options—22K and 12K—both featuring panoramic night sky views from elevated sections and incorporating significant historical landmarks. The 22K route takes runners through MOD land at Deacons Hill and provides sweeping vistas from Cheesefoot Head, while both distances finish along the scenic Itchen Way river section back to Winchester Athletics Track. With well-stocked aid stations, on-course photographers capturing the unique atmosphere, and enthusiastic volunteers supporting throughout, this event combines trail running with historical exploration under the stars. The race maintains high participant satisfaction with comprehensive safety measures and optional tree planting instead of traditional finisher medals through their TreesNotTees initiative.
Both distances start from Winchester Athletics Track and head onto the South Downs Way under cover of darkness. The 22K route climbs steadily to Cheesefoot Head for panoramic night sky views before descending through Fawley towards Morestead in a circular loop. Runners then traverse MOD land at Deacons Hill where they join 12K participants on the historic Pilgrims Trail, passing St Catherines Hill before following the Itchen Way river section back to the finish line at the athletics track.
