About This Event
The 2X2 Race stands as Romania's most challenging ultra mountain marathon, distinguished as the country's only race that takes place entirely above 2,000 meters altitude. Set in the spectacular Făgăraș Mountains, this technical ultra carries runners across Romania's two highest peaks: Moldoveanu (2,544m) and Negoiu (2,535m). With its demanding 45-kilometer course and massive 4,200-meter elevation gain, this race ranks among the world's most difficult mountain ultramarathons. The event is limited to 200 carefully selected runners who must demonstrate mountain running experience to ensure they can handle the physical and psychological demands of racing at extreme altitude. Now in its 14th edition, the 2X2 Race also features shorter distance options, including the X2 Race that covers 18 kilometers with 1,900 meters of elevation gain to reach Negoiu peak. All races start and finish at Cabana Salvamont Bâlea Lac, providing a unique high-altitude racing experience along Romania's most dramatic mountain ridge.
